The best way to know if you are dealing with oil mist or oil smoke or even submicron particles is to use a particle measuring device, for example a ”DustTrak”. By using this device an indicative value will be given and with this as a base, the correct process filtration can be selected. If you don’t possess a DustTrak, Industrial Air Systems will be happy to assist – of course for free!
Generally high fluid pressures (> 30 Bar) or high spindle speed (>10’000 rpm) will demand a process filter suitable for oil smoke. At these conditions neat oil is usually used. Not only are the oil smoke particles much smaller than the oil mist particles, they are often many more if you count them.
